BACKGROUND
The Salud y Solidaridad Health Center and Medical Brigade Project operates on the
idea that all youth have the right to health care and the right to information and
resources to protect their own health. The health center offers youth-friendly
triage, reproductive and sexual health, and primary care services to street children
and young adults. In the streets of Guayaquil—Ecuador's largest city and home to
the greatest percentage of street kids—we conduct weekly medical brigades and
offer on-site primary care consultation complete with referrals and support for
advanced medical treatment. In addition, we provide street kids with access to
subsidized health and hygiene products to allow them to independently protect and
maintain their health.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Since June 2005, we have provided the following care to the children in the streets:
  • Primary and triage care on over 500 counts
  • Health counseling to over 100 kids
  • Hygiene kits to over 200 kids
  • Referrals and financial and social support for advanced medical care to over 100 kids
