There are an estimated 1,000 children living in the streets in Ecuador. The majority
of children are separated from home between the ages of 7 and 10 years for
reasons related to parental abandonment or sexual and/or physical abuse. Once on
the streets, children are vulnerable to various forms of abuse, illness, injury and
substance use--children that spend at least one year on the streets tend to fall
victim to all of the abuse. With histories of behavioral issues, health problems,
substance abuse, and violence, many children are ineligible for services provided by
local faith- and community-based organizations. As a result, they grow up in the
streets without documentation of identification, education, health care, or
employment opportunity.
